Lake Geauga Young Republicans- UPDATE

Hello News Herald Readers!

It has been a busy last couple of months for the Lake Geauga Young Republicans. After inducting Judge Vincent Culotta into our Hall of Fame in May, the group has continued to operate in high gear. We have been assisting candidates through a variety of channels. The LGYR's have helped candidates organize fundraisers, and walked with them in parades in Chargin Falls, Mentor on the Lake, Willoughby, and Kirtland. We also had the pleasure of working beside U.S. Senate candidate Rob Portman, and Attorney General candidate Mike DeWine as they greeted folks at the Fairport Harbor Mardi Gras. This weekend, we made new friends at the Painesville Party in the Park, while enlisting Lake and Geauga area residents to assist in the campaigns of John Kasich for Governor and Ron Young for 63rd District State Representative.

At the Ohio Young Republican convention June 25-27 in Canton, the LGYR's won the 2010award for Fund- raising and Budgeting. The weekend also saw the re- election of our own Ryan Johnson as Ohio Chairman of the Young Republicans. The LGYR's were proud to have more delegates at the convention than any chapter in the state!

Our next meeting is July 27th, 7:30 P.M. at Olivor Twist in Downtown Willoughby. We are excited to have Lake County Auditor Edward Zupancic as our guest speaker. This is a great opportunity to learn more about how local tax dollars are accounted for, and how your property is valued. Looking forward to seeing everyone there!

Lake Geauga Young Republicans...what we do

First and foremost, we are citizens. So what we do tomorrow, May 4th, is vote is the primary election. I believe good and bad habits are hard to break. If we get into the habit and being informed and voting whenever the opportunity arises, it will be a hard habit to break.

The LGYR's spoke with the senior government classes at Mentor High School Friday, April 30th. After meeting with the students, I believe that there are many future leaders out there waiting to be discovered! The key phrase is "out there." All that civic organizations have to do is reach out, and they will see what a great job the educators and parents are doing with their children in the Lake Geauga area.

Our Hall of Fame Dinner is this Friday, May 7th. We are inducting Judge Vincent Culotta of the Lake County Court of Common Pleas, and we are excited to have Justice Maureen O'Connor of the Ohio Supreme Court as our keynote speaker. Please comment to this blog, and we will provide you with more details.

Our year from now on will be focused on helping our candidates. We are looking for ideas from the community about this, so tell us what you think about our options. Presenting these options with all the information available is the first step toward making the right choice- for volunteering, and then voting in November.

Lake Geauga Young Republicans....our people

Who are some of the future leaders I spoke about in the first post on this blog? The 2010 LGYR Executive Board consists of President Adam Rosplock, Vice President Brian Wollet, Treasurer Jon Shoop, Secretary Bridgit Shoop, and Trustee Morgan McIntosh. Our committee chairpersons are as follows: Scott Heath, Political Activities; Liberty Schindel, Membership; Kate Gibbons, Charitable Activities; and Rick Zaleski, Hall of Fame Dinner/Fundraising.

In addition, we are also fortunate to have former LGYR board member Ryan Johnson as the 2010 Ohio Young Republican Chairman, providing us with informed and intelligent updates from around the state. This is the kind of organization where even after one serves on the Board, his or her role in the LGYR's is far from over. We've had so many members go on to important positions in the Republican Party at the local and state level, yet they are always around to participate in LGYR activities on a regular basis.

In addition, the group has had strong support from our current leadership in the party. Lake County Republican Party Chairpersons Dale Fellows and Jan Clair, and Geauga County Republican Party Chairman Ed Ryder are a few of the leaders who have helped the LGYR's be the best we can.

Lake Geauga Young Republicans....our mission

As many News Herald readers already know, the Lake Geauga Young Republican (LGYR) club is a club consisting of just that- young (18-39 years old) Republicans who live in the Lake- Geauga County area. Many readers may not know the diversity that exists inside these seemingly small categories. Some of our members are concerned with one issue in particular- perhaps health care or the economy. Others are more traditional, straight across the board conservatives. And we certainly have those whose primary interest when they join the Lake Geauga Young Republicans getting involved in campaigns- with a desire to be a candidate or a campaign manager.
The one thing all of us have in common in a desire to keep the Lake- Geauga County area the ideal place to live. The LGYR’s are group of “doers.” We discuss, and yes sometimes criticize what we don’t like about northeast Ohio and the rest of the world. But instead of just going on with our lives, we take time out to make those lives and the lives of others better. Almost all of us are either employed full- time, or are students earning degrees. Several of us are doing or have done both simultaneously. But we are a club full of people who want to lead, and leading means committing that extra time. We want the opportunity to someday be involved in making important decisions- decisions that keep the Lake- Geauga County area somewhere we’re all proud to live in. Because we want to lead in government, we encourage our current government leaders to support the LGYR’s. This includes leaders of all political parties. Please tell us why we should support you, or a candidate you support. Tell us what roles you believe young people should be playing in government. We will listen, even if we don’t always agree with you. But please understand that you’ll be helping to shape a group filled with future councilpersons, state representatives, city managers, judges, and more than likely, federal officials as well. We are lucky we have so many quality leaders in the Lake- Geauga County area, teaching us how to handle government roles with integrity.

Next- Lake Geauga Young Republicans......our people.
